Bobby J. Donaldson, Ph.D., Southern history and African American life scholar will be first guest lecturer

The Camden Archives and Museum and the African American Cultural Center of Camden announce a new lecture series on African American culture in Camden and Kershaw County.  Entitled “Let’s Talk About…” , the cultural education series will kick off its first program on Saturday, November 17 at 1:30 pm at the Camden Archives and Museum. 

The featured speaker for the inaugural program in the series is Bobby J. Donaldson, PH.D., Associate Professor of History and head of the Center for Civil Rights Research at the University of South Carolina. His presentation will focus on the Civil Rights Movement in South Carolina, with particular emphasis on events in Camden during the 1950s and 1960s.

Professor Donaldson is a noted scholar of southern history and African American life and culture in the 19th and 20th centuries.  His research and lecture topics explore African American intellectual thought, education, and religion, and print culture.  He has contributed his expertise to museum exhibits, archival collections, oral historic projects, documentary films and historic preservation projects.  He earned his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and his Ph.D. from Emory University. Currently, Professor Donaldson leads the Center for Civil Rights History and Research, housed in the Hollings Special Collections Library at USC.  He also serves as the lead scholar for “Columbia SC 63: Our Story Matters”, a documentary history initiative that chronicles the struggle for civil rights and social justice in Columbia.               

The public is invited to attend this inaugural “Let’s Talk About …” program on Saturday November 17 from 1:30 until 3:00 at the Camden Archives and Museum, 1314 Broad Street, Camden, S.C.  The program will include the presentation and a question and answer session.  Light refreshments will be served afterward.
